UU7J (4L0A): Methods for “success”
Recently the organizers of probably the most popular contest - CQWW – started to publish the logs of the participants after log checking. Presumably this is done with the purpose of allowing the participants to look at the logs of competitors and assess their own operation. Evidently, the aim has been also to disclose any unsportsmanlike methods of competition among the contestants. In order to see the big picture I took all the logs of CQ WW CW 2008 and made the analysis of one of the leading scores.
I would like to point out that the aim of this article is not to write a “handbook for breaking the contest rules” but this is rather an attempt to inform all current and future participants of these contests that virtually any kind of analysis has become possible with the availability of all logs. And it doesn’t make any sense to try to fool your competitors, the organizers or yourselves …
Having all the logs - downloaded and forwarded to me by Andrey, UZ7HO, computer programming skills from my university years and an old PC with Turbo Pascal 7.0 I started to revive my long forgotten passion of programming in my beloved area of application – radiosporting.
I will describe in this article a few methods, which can be found through the analysis and which will clearly stick out thanks to the availability of logs from all participants and which are clearly visible even with with “naked eye”.
The analysis is made with logs of the participants from cqww.com and pieces of software written by myself and UZ7HO in Pascal. The logs that had not been sent were generated from the existing logs. This method of generating logs is used by the judges of VHF contests and these logs are called “reverse logs”. I will also use this terminology further in this article.
I will try to restrain myself from making conclusions in this article, let the readers observe and make their own judgment. However, I will describe some details that I find, after my 28 years on the air, unrealistic, to say the least. Some of the examples may be missing the exchange and the mode.
This article is mainly about team UU7J that worked from Georgia with call sign 4L0A. As found on the site http://www.uu7j.com the team of UU7J consists of UU0JM, UU5MAF, UU4JMG, UU1AZ, UU5JIB, UU2JZ, UU0JX, UU1DX, UT5UGR(V31WA), UU1JA. The team 4L0A from Georgia had UU0JM, UU1AZ, UU4JMG. It’s worth while mentioning that UU0JM was recently awarded a medal for his work with the young, UU1AZ was the Head Judge of the Ukrainian CW Championship this year.
So, what did the analysis show.
The first method of improving your score “generating mults”. Or to put it straightforward – “work with false call signs”. The “reverse logs” of DX-stations were generated from the existing logs. The table shows all contacts in the logs of these stations in the chronological order. As the result we have a sort of combined log.

Pay attention to how the multipliers appear together on the band, “hand in hand”, and start calling the CQ-ing stations. Probably the most surprised were J43J and S56X. Such a “luck” in the end of the contest!!!
TT8JLB does not exist on QRZ.com, the Nigerian and VP2V have been active in the past, the FP promised to be active in the end of November 2008. And for the information I would like to add that LZ9W was in the Unlimited category, that’s why they were on 40 and 80 simultaneously, EA8ZS – MOST. The rest I did not check.
The second method is just bluntly making up QSO’s. To avoid making them unique these QSO’s need to appear in the logs of at least two stations. This how it looks like. These are “reverse” logs with all QSO’s of these stations included. This phenomenon was discovered by Andrey, UZ7HO.

None of these stations had sent the log. One can see “stubborn” persistence of working only two stations. Widely unknown T77Q, after calling a little CQ, during the night works 4L0A and then goes to sleep. In the morning he finishes the job, makes another CQ and goes QRT. There is no info on him on QRZ.com. Also, UA0LP is non-existent. The call sign UA3AH is real. Didn’t check the others.
The QSO with TG9ANF is really interesting, just SUPER! Until then, during many years, he had only worked high bands SSB and RTTY. Suddenly he “sees the light” and starts doing CW and puts up an antenna on 80 meters. He is rewarded with a QSO with 4L0A. And V31WA, while he’s at it …
OH2JXA, I think, you can see yourselves. NO COMMENTS!
BTW, what’s described below is by far not all of it. Don’t have time to check the spots, QRZ.com, etc.
It’s worth pointing out that all these stations, with the exception of T77Q and OH2JXA, worked only with two stations, namely V31WA and 4L0A. Then there are about 50 more call signs that made three QSO’s – with V31WA, 4L0A and with one more station. The call signs of the third station were all different. For the sake of saving time and space I have not included all these examples in this article.
The third method: work two bands in parallel. Below just one example of such operation. The real 4L0A log looks like this.

With the help of the “reverse” logs we can see clearly the violation of the 10-minute rule on the multiplier station, working on two bands when the band change is made. There are some incidents like this, not too many. After generating the “reverse” log of 4L0A and loading it into N1MM the Rescoring-procedure set the multipliers. It was then obvious that the multiplier station was working everybody. It is not clear why. Either they were not keeping the count of mults or were just hoping that the judges would not notice and would count all the QSO’s. Or was it just a plea to the judges to rescore them as M2. Perhaps in many years from now some Crimean radio-guy will shed some light on this secret …
There were also flashes of propagation on 15 meters to Odessa, Kiev and Lugansk (see 1500 GMT the second day) and special love affair of Ukrainian and Moldovan stations with 4L0A, which is described further in the article.

In the latter it’s worth noticing that the program has formed incorrect call sign UT6UCP in the 7 MHz QSO with V31WA. Also, the long gaps between the QSO’s are interesting, especially as it’s night. The two logs were generated with the same version of software, TR Log POST, version 6.76.

Below is the list of Ukrainian stations that are found in the log of 4L0A four times or more. 49 call signs can be found three times, 68 calls twice and 195 calls once. Total of “live” Ukrainian stations is currently 351. So, we seem to have some reserves for Ukrainian CW Championship!!! An interesting fact – Sergei Rebrov (UT5UDX) worked as ER0WW in this contest, made 5210 QSO’s, out of these 195 with Ukraine (143 different stations).

I would like to make two comments to the above. I worked at UZ2M in this contest and I confirm that we made 6 QSO’s. But with UT5MB’s permission I can say that he made 56 QSO’s in this contest and none with 4L0A. UT2MN informed us through UT5MB that he did not participate in this contest. Therefore I ask all of you who have read this article and have found familiar call signs, remember that some hams have their call signs in the logs of 4L0A and V31WA without them knowing about it. If you chose to address them regarding this issue, be objective. It is very important not to insult a person without a reason!!!
In conclusion I would like to add that I wish this kind of evidence would not appear again in our ham radio circles, and the hams whose call signs are mentioned here would not forget that the ham bands are our common home. Let’s be polite and honest with ourselves and with each other.
