St. Lucia Island – paradise in every single way

Saint Lucia is one of the most beautiful places in the Caribbean. One of the things that makes this island different than all the other Caribbean Island is its mountainous nature. Mountains are all around. The highest point in Saint Lucia is Mount Gimie, at 950 meters above sea level. There are two volcanic plugs, located on the western side of the island. The Gros Piton (771 meters), and Petit Piton (743 meters), and they form most popular landmark of the island, known as the Pitons. With many interesting attractions, astonishing beaches, friendly locals, various festivals and many things people can do around, it is not surprising that Saint Lucia is one of the famous tourist destinations. People who live there are focused on tourism, because the entire area is highly appealing.

Saint Lucia History

The French and the British fought to colonize the island. French has reached an agreement with the Caribs. This agreement has resulted in the creation of the first European settlement on the island. The French have developed many plantations, some of which still exists today. With their arrival to Saint Lucia, the era of advanced agriculture economy began, but it was all based on the work of slaves. During the French colonization, the British were trying to establish their authority on the island as well. On the other hand, Caribs wanted to expel the French. The main reason why these two countries wanted to colonize the island, lay in the fact that both, French and British, have seen this island as an excellent strategic point. That entire period can be briefly described: seven times British, seven times French. However, although the British were the last in power, the French definitely had a stronger influence, because many waterways, and cities have French names.

Capital city and demographics

The capital city, which is also the largest city of Saint Lucia Island is Castries. The population of the island is a bit more than 170,000 and the capital city contains more than 1/3 of entire Island population. English is the official language. Most of the people who live on the Saint Lucia Island are Roman Catholic. One of the interesting facts is that two men from Saint Lucia won the Nobel Prize, Sir Arthur Lewis in Economics, and Derek Walcott in Literature. Another interesting fact is that both winners were born on the same day, January 23, just not the same year.
