Easter Island is a wonderful holiday destination

A small piece of land in the Pacific Ocean, which is a part of Chile - Easter Island. This place is of the greatest interest for travellers and lovers of exotic places of the planet.
The island is world famous for its huge statues made of stone. These stone giants are the only witnesses of the island's mystery, knowing why the island's civilisation ended. Modern scientists are still making various hypotheses in search of an answer.

How to get around Easter Island

All the iconic sites, are practically next to each other. This is a positive feature of a small island. The whole island can be travelled by bicycle, and car hire is also available. It is impossible to get lost here. There are two roads on the island, which is enough to visit all its corners.
You can rent a car with a full tank of fuel for $80 per day at 2018 prices. One should keep an eye on the amount of fuel right away when renting. There is nowhere else to fill up with petrol on the island.

Easter Island beach spots

There are a few decent beaches, but swimming is only possible at the area called Anakenu. There are cafes on the sandy beach, and the surrounding scenery is very reminiscent of the familiar Black Sea coastline.
There are also trays with soft drinks, and locals bring sweets and snacks. A steady smell of kebab flies over the beach. And the ocean surface stretches all the way to the horizon.

Where to eat?

The island has a system of small inexpensive cafes. Here you can always have a snack. It is better to choose dishes made of seafood. Tuna steak is very good. Steaks are one of the local specialities that are worth trying. The meat is served traditionally with potatoes and greens. From drinks you can stop at beer. This drink here is quite pleasant with a mild flavour.

Souvenir shops

Islanders mainly earn money by selling souvenirs. Several shops and small shops are open for this purpose. The main souvenir is a replica of a stone statue. When buying a large souvenir, think about the possibility of free export from the country. The most bought figurines are kawakawa - ghost man.

Where to holiday and what to see on Easter Island

Moai made of stone

The figures are made of petrified ash. Depicting humans, the statues have shortened torsos and elongated skulls. Each statue weighs about 20 tonnes. Locals pass on the belief that the statues contain the mighty power of the island's first leader, Hotu Matua.
The most exotic version is that the stone statues themselves came to the island from the water, but then lost the ability to move and remained standing on the shore.
There are approximately 900 figures on the island. Most of them are located in the immediate vicinity of the Rano-Raraku volcano.

Volcanoes

The two craters of Rano-Kau and Rano-Raraku, which provided the material for the moai, are noteworthy. Here you can see the unfinished figures.

Orongo Village and Hanga Roa Church

This is where artisans live and Catholic services are held on Sundays. The streets are lined with stones depicting a bird-man.

Best beaches on the island

There are several beaches on the island that are renowned for their unprecedented popularity. The high waves are a surfing hotspot. You can hire a professional guide to visit them, or you can get there on your own.
As for surfing, in the harbour of Hanga Roa you can go to the seclusion of the water and enjoy the gorgeous waves. You can also picnic at Hanga Roa Harbour - there are several cafes, a car park and pay toilets. And under the overhanging palm trees, you can relax and abstract yourself from the world around you.
Anakena - this place has been considered the home of colonising tribes since ancient times.
The second most popular beach is Ovahe. The road to it is quite rocky and uneven, so be careful. It is best to reach the beach on foot, as travelling by car is - illegal.
On Ovahe beach there are cases when strong waves wash away the sand, but soon it comes back. The last such case was recorded in 2012.

Popular leisure activities

You can visit Terevaka Island, famous for its clean air and beautiful scenery. You can go hiking or horse riding.
Scuba diving is a popular pastime, even despite the big waves. But, remember that you should not conquer the waves on your own without an instructor. There are many diving centres on the island that will provide you with all the necessary paraphernalia and give you a full tour.

Shopping and Shops

The whole cluster of shops and souvenir shops is located in the village of Hanga Roa. You'll be able to purchase artisan products, figurines, island symbols and more. In addition, many sellers intentionally inflate the price for this or that thing. Therefore, you will be able to bargain a little and knock down the inflated cost. When paying, it is better to use cash, as not all sellers accept cashless payment.

Easter Island nightlife

The nightlife on Easter Island is no less vibrant than in major metropolises. The main attraction and entertainment on the island is Polynesian dance shows. But remember that during the Tapati period, you will not be able to watch the show, as the artists leave for the festival. But during this time you can visit the Toroku discotheque.

What every tourist should do on Easter Island

Every tourist visiting Easter Island for the first time simply must do these 5 things:

  1. At the end of January - the beginning of February on the island there is a grand festival "Tapati", you just have to visit this place, which has no analogues. Here the aborigines demonstrate all their traditions and customs of ancient times, as well as organise fights and show the culture of the tribes.
  2. Climb up to the Te Pito te henua site which offers a stunning view, it covers literally the whole island.
  3. Have a romantic date in the palm grove. The unrivalled scenery, clean air and romantic atmosphere will add sophistication to your picnic.
  4. Make up your own unique story about the origin of the statues. Then tell it to the locals and if they are interested, they will write it in the tourist book.
  5. Visit the village of Orongo. Only there you can see the mysterious hieroglyphs and learn about the history of the emergence of writing rongo-rongo, which is still not fully deciphered.
