MACAU

Macau, also known as Jyutping or Macao is one of the two Special Administrative Regions of the Peoples Republic of China. Macau has the South China Sea to the south and east, the Guangdong Province to the north and the Pearl River Delta to the west and has a total area of 12.1 square miles. With a population of more than 600,000 people, Macau is the most densely populated area of the world.

Originally Macau was a Portuguese colony from the 16th century till the later 1900’s. It was one of the last colonies of Europe in Asia. Macau was under the Panyu county jurisdiction and its first inhabitants were people seeking refuge from the dreaded Mongols around 221-206 BC. Macau developed as a major settlement with the arrival of the Portuguese. The first Portuguese to land in China was Jorge Alvarez in 1513. Macau was rented out to the Portuguese as a trading port by the Ming Emperor and until 1887 the Portuguese controlled the administration of the city but under Chinese authority, after which the city became a colony of the Portuguese. Control over Macau was given back to China in 1999 with the Sino-Portuguese Joint Declaration.

Macau or Macao has climate very similar to South China, with humid subtropical Climate and relative humidity ranging from 70% to 90%, the change in temperature between summer and winter are quite noticeable. The city has ample rainfall but winters are mostly dry because of the Siberian High which affects most of Eastern China. Summers are very hot and humid which are often followed by thunderstorms and occasional typhoons.

Tourism and hospitality contribute to about 45%-50% of the Gross Domestic Product of Macao. Other economic activities that help raise the GDP are garment manufacture, financial services, banking and textile made for export. Macao is one of the founders of World Trade Organisation (WTO) and has trading relation with over 120 countries and is also a member of the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Macau boasts of the perfect balance between Chinese and Portuguese cultures. Here, both cultures and traditions are important which leaves the city with many festivals, holidays and events that take place round the year. The primary festival is the Chinese New Year, which is celebrated either in the late January month or early February month, depending on the Lunar Calendar, while the most important event celebrated is the Macau Grand Prix where the main street of the Peninsular are converted into race tracks to host the Formula 1 Series in November.

Located in the Southeast area of the Peninsular, the A-Ma Temple was built during the Ming Dynasty in honour of Mazu, the sea goddess who blessed the people of Macau with bountiful fish. There are four different pavilions here that are dedicated for worshipping different gods and goddesses and is an example of representation of the Chinese culture that is inspired by folklore, Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism. Tourists can take the bus from Senado Square and the temple is open every day from 10am to 6pm. While the entrance to the temple is free care must be taken as during the afternoon this area gets very hot and humid. Tourists travelling from cooler regions must ensure that they have enough protection from the heat.
