If you are looking for a convenient place to get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, then there's probably no better place than Nassau, Bahamas. The Bahamas consists of more than 700 islands located where the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean come together at the south end of Florida. Just a hop skip and a jump from Miami and at very short plane ride from most United States cities. Just about every international airport in the United States has direct flights to the Bahamas, so you can be there before you know it.

Nassau’s Past

Let's look briefly at the history of the Bahamas. The Bahamas were originally inhabited by the Taino Indians. Over the next several centuries they were controlled by a variety of European powers including, the Spanish, the British, and the French all spent time controlling these islands. Each of these European groups left an indelible flavor as a reminder of their time spent in the Bahamas.

Since they are most recently a former colony of Great Britain, the Bahamas speak English as their principal language although people from around the world call the Bahamas home. Most international travelers will have no problem whatsoever communicating with anyone in the Bahamas because English is universally spoken and the Bahamians are quite clearly understandable.

Winds and Waves

The most obvious choice for traveling to the Bahamas would be to enjoy the sun, the waves, the beaches and the drinks with umbrellas in them. However, the Bahamas a lot more to offer than simply the typical things we think of in an island getaway. Of course, you'll probably want to enjoy one of those cold and frosty island concoctions while you lay in a lounge chair on the beach. But there are so many more interesting things you could be doing and the little adventure and exploration you will find that the Bahamas have so much to offer.

Demographics

The demographics of the island make it a very interesting place to be. The Bahamas have an estimated population a little bit fewer than 400,000 people and a very young population with almost a quarter of those under the age of 14. Most Bahamians are of African ancestry in about 12% are of Anglo European ancestry. The religious groups on the island are quite diverse with Christianity being the largest group being represented. Protestant Baptists represent about 35% of the population, Anglicans represent about 15%, and Catholics represent about 13%. There are also a variety of other religions and denominations that are represented on the islands. Clearly, the Bahamas is a very culturally diverse place to be.

The capital of the Bahamas, Nassau, is located on the island of New Providence. Most of the population of the Bahamas lived in or around the capital. Most travelers who visit the islands will undoubtedly disembark in Nassau. Nassau really seems to have it all with an interesting combination of British and island flavor. With marvelous beaches galore, world-renowned coral reefs that are perfect for sort liter scuba diving, world-class dining experiences, shopping extravaganzas, and simply an ambience that can't be found anywhere else.

If you're a fan of the James Bond movies, you may be interested in visiting the British colonial hotel that was used in the filming there for two of the movies during the era of Sean Connery. There's also a very interesting festival that takes place in Nassau called the Junkanoo Festival.

The Junkanoo festival is very similar in style to that of Mardi gras or Carnival. You can only imagine the beautiful parades adorned with feathers and flowers as well as the elaborate and colorful costumes of the participants. It is a very high energy at spectacle and the dancers prepare for an entire year in advance. Recently the Bahamians have been practicing this festival two times during the year, once in the summer and once on Boxing Day after Christmas. Some say that this festival has its roots in African culture while others say that it's a uniquely Bahamian experience.

Travel Options

Many Americans and other world travelers come to the Bahamas through many of the cruise lines which have ports in the Bahamas. Most of the cruise lines such as Carnival and Holland America, not only have special private beaches for their passengers but also maintain many agreements with businesses and other travel venues on the island so that their passengers can receive special treatment and lower rates. Cruise lines are responsible for bringing the majority of travelers to the islands.

Accommodations Ideas in Nassau

There is a plethora of opportunities and choices for those who are seeking hotel accommodations in Nassau. Everything from simple hotels to four and five-star resorts are available. However, savvy to rest may choose to stay in the many luxurious bed and breakfasts that are located on the island. Many beds and breakfasts in Nassau are run by local families and not only provide excellent accommodation but also provides a tourist with a little bit of an idea of what it means to be a Bahamian.

Bahamian Weather and Climate

The Bahamian climate is certainly one to be desired. Surprisingly, there has never been a frost or freezing weather ever reported on any island in the Bahamas chain. They coldest reported temperature on record is around 37°F. Most of the year, the Bahamas are and exceptionally warm with temperatures typically staying between 75 and 95°F. Nassau does have to be concerned about periodic hurricanes that come through the archipelago every 2 to 3 years. The last major hurricanes to do any serious impact to the Bahamas were hurricane Andrew in 1992 and hurricane Floyd back in 1999.
